The Effect of Altitude on the Carry Distance of a Cricket Ball During Power Hitting
Project Description
Date: Fall 2024
How far would a power hit cricket ball go at the top of Mount Everest? I was curious...
The England Wales Cricket Board is currently exploring “power hitting” which is a batting technique that maximizes the carry distance of a cricket ball traveling through the air in hopes that the ball will clear the pitch boundary line and thereby score a six. Power hitting, also known as range hitting, has become a more popular batting style in modern cricket due to the rise of T20 style games which are shorter formats of cricket where scoring higher is crucial to win. I have created a trajectory model and GUI in Python showing the trajectory of a cricket ball during a power hit at different elevations to see how the carry distance is impacted by the altitude and air density.
